A Functional Masterpiece for Your Kitchen

Every kitchen tells a story. Very few feature a true focal point that stops guests in their tracks.

This is not just a cutting board — it's a meticulously crafted, heirloom-quality canvas for your daily culinary rituals. Imagine the satisfying feel of your chef's knife gliding across a perfectly smooth, warm wooden surface. Picture the rich, interlocking geometric chevron pattern in sapele and ash catching the morning light on your counter.

Heavy. Perfectly balanced. Velvety to the touch. A board you'll proudly leave on display long after the meal is prepared.

At 370 × 350 mm with a substantial 40 mm thickness, this is a near-square format — generous enough for serving a full cheese board, weighty enough to anchor itself, and visually balanced enough to become a permanent fixture on your counter.

🌳 The Magic of Sapele & Ash — Two Premium Hardwoods

We sourced two distinctly different hardwoods to create this mesmerising pattern.

Sapele — an exotic, highly sought-after African hardwood known for its deep, rich reddish-brown hues and ribbon-like shimmering grain. In face-grain construction, sapele's iridescent ribbon figure reveals itself in full — a shifting play of light that changes as you move around the board.

European Ash — a bright, exceptionally tough wood with prominent, beautiful grain patterns. Its creamy golden tones and bold open grain provide the perfect, crisp contrast to the dark sapele, creating a living, three-dimensional visual effect.

No stains. No dyes. Every tone is the wood itself.

💎 The Chevron Diamond — Where Pattern Meets Grain

Face-grain construction is what lets the wood's natural personality shine brightest. Instead of looking at the end of the wood fibres, you see the full length of the grain — every streak, every ribbon, every subtle tonal shift in the hardwood.

Our chevron diamond pattern is engineered to showcase this. Every strip is individually cut at precise angles and bonded by hand so the grain of each piece flows into the next, creating the interlocking diamond effect.

  • 🔩 Seamless joints — precision-cut and expertly bonded into a unified surface
  • 🛡️ Long-lasting surface — both sapele and ash are dense, durable hardwoods that resist wear far better than softer alternatives like pine or bamboo
  • 🔪 Kind to your knives — a smooth, hand-sanded hardwood surface that's significantly gentler on your blade edges than plastic, glass, or stone

🪵 Face-Grain Construction — Built for Beauty & Everyday Use

Unlike end-grain butcher blocks built for heavy chopping, face-grain boards are crafted to show off the wood. The long grain runs visibly across the surface, revealing each board's unique character.

This makes them ideal for:

  • Serving charcuterie, cheese, bread and grazing boards
  • Everyday slicing — fruits, vegetables, herbs, cheese, loaves
  • Light prep work that benefits from a gentler-than-plastic surface
  • Display pieces that belong on your counter, not hidden in a drawer

With care — regular oiling and hand-washing — a face-grain board of this density will last for years and develop a warm patina that only improves with use.

Care Instructions

Your board arrives pre-oiled, pre-waxed, and ready to use. To keep the wood colours vibrant and the surface protected, follow these simple steps.

✅ Do

  • Wash by hand — warm water and a small amount of mild soap
  • Wipe dry immediately — stand upright or lay flat on a rack; never leave wet on a surface
  • Condition periodically — apply food-safe mineral oil or board butter every 1–2 months to keep the sapele and ash deeply nourished and water-resistant
  • Re-wax occasionally — a thin coat of beeswax every few months keeps the surface sealed and the colours rich
  • Revive if needed — if the surface ever feels rough, a light sand with 220-grit paper followed by oiling restores it completely

❌ Don't

  • No dishwasher — ever. Heat and prolonged moisture will crack and warp the board irreversibly
  • No soaking — never submerge or leave standing in water
  • No direct sunlight — extended exposure can fade the sapele's reddish-brown tone over time

💡 Sapele naturally deepens to a richer reddish-brown with age and regular oiling — a transformation that makes the chevron contrast more striking, not less.

FAQ

Is the board ready to use straight out of the box?

Yes. Every board is finished with multiple hand-applied coats of food-safe mineral oil and beeswax before it ships. No prep needed — unbox, admire, and start cooking.

What is sapele, and is it safe for food contact?

Sapele is a premium African hardwood from the mahogany family, prized for its deep reddish-brown colour, shimmering ribbon-figure grain, and natural durability. When properly finished with food-safe mineral oil and beeswax — as every MNCWOOD board is — sapele is completely safe for all food contact.

How is the chevron diamond pattern made?

Each strip is individually cut at precise angles and glued by hand in our Polish workshop. The chevron diamond is built piece by piece from two separate hardwoods — not printed, stamped, or veneered. Because the pattern is assembled from real solid wood strips, no two boards are ever exactly identical.

Will the colours change over time?

Yes, and beautifully. Sapele naturally deepens to a richer reddish-brown with age and regular oiling. Ash develops a warmer golden patina. The contrast between the two woods remains striking — many owners say their board becomes more beautiful every year.

What should I use this board for?

Face-grain boards are designed for serving and light-to-medium prep rather than heavy butchering. They're ideal for charcuterie, cheese, bread, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and general slicing. For heavy daily chopping of raw meat or breaking down whole cuts, an end-grain butcher block is a better tool. Think of this board as both a working surface and a display piece.

Can I cut raw meat on it?

Yes — occasional meat prep is fine. Wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately afterwards. If you butcher meat daily or regularly process whole cuts, we'd recommend one of our end-grain butcher blocks as a dedicated meat board instead.

Why face-grain instead of end-grain?

Face-grain construction shows the wood at its most beautiful — you see the full length of the grain, which is where the ribbon-figure in sapele and the open grain of ash really come alive. It's also lighter, easier to handle, and far more visually striking as a serving piece. End-grain boards are harder on the surface but less expressive visually. Different tools for different jobs.

Why is this board 40 mm thick?

Most face-grain boards on the market are 20–25 mm thick. We make ours at 40 mm — nearly double — for three reasons: substantial weight that keeps the board anchored while you work, a premium heirloom feel in the hand, and enough material mass to stay flat for decades if properly cared for.

Why is this board nearly square (370 × 350 mm)?

The near-square format is unusual and intentional — it gives you a generous, balanced workspace that doesn't favour any direction. Equally good for slicing along the long edge, arranging a cheese board in the centre, or rotating prepped ingredients to one corner. The shape also visually anchors the chevron pattern, making the geometric design read more strongly than on a longer rectangle.

Is this a good wedding or anniversary gift?

Especially for the 5th anniversary — traditionally celebrated with a gift of wood. The combination of premium materials, personalisation option, and lifetime durability makes it a meaningful heirloom rather than a disposable gift.

How should I care for the board?

Hand-wash only with warm soapy water, dry immediately with a towel, and never soak or put in the dishwasher. Re-oil every 1–2 months with food-safe mineral oil (or a mineral oil & beeswax blend) — more often in the first few months, less often as the board matures. With basic care, this board will last generations.

Can I get a custom size or different wood combination?

Yes. We welcome custom orders — different dimensions, alternative wood species, or bulk orders for weddings and events. Send us a message through the store and we'll respond within one business day.

How do I care for the engraving?

The laser engraving is deep and permanent — it won't fade with oiling or normal use. Treat the engraved area exactly the same as the rest of the board.

What if my board arrives damaged?

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with a photo. We'll arrange a replacement or full refund — no questions asked.
