The Checkerboard That Quietly Steals the Show

There's something almost hypnotic about this board.

The bold checkerboard of warm European ash and rich, auburn sapele draws the eye before a single vegetable has been chopped. Handcrafted square by square, each block reveals a unique constellation of annual rings on its end-grain face — making this truly a one-of-a-kind piece.

At 290 × 250 × 35 mm, it's a perfectly balanced mid-size board — generous enough to anchor a Sunday prep session, compact enough to live permanently on the counter. Honey-toned ash. Reddish-brown sapele. A pattern as quietly bold as the cooks who'll use it.

♟️ The Checkerboard — Built Square by Square

This isn't a printed pattern. It isn't veneered. It's built block by block — every individual square hand-cut and glued to maintain perfect alignment across the entire surface. Because it's end-grain, each block reveals its own unique pattern of annual rings when sanded — meaning every square on the board is genuinely one of a kind.

Look closely and you'll see decades of growth in every block.

🌳 Two Hardwoods. One Surface.

European Ash — light, honey-toned, with an open expressive grain. Strong, shock-resistant, and the perfect bright counterpoint to the deeper sapele.

Sapele — a premium African hardwood from the mahogany family, prized for its warm reddish-brown colour and shimmering ribbon-figure grain. Naturally resistant to moisture and rich with character.

No stains. No dyes. Every tone is the wood itself.

🔪 End-Grain Construction — Self-Healing Surface

Unlike face-grain or edge-grain boards, end-grain cutting boards receive the knife blade between wood fibres — not across them. The fibres part, then close back up after every cut. This self-healing property keeps your knives sharper for longer and your board surface cleaner over time.

End-grain boards also absorb impact better, resisting deep gouges that can harbour bacteria. And here's the best part: the more you use it, the more beautiful it becomes — the natural patina deepens and the pattern grows richer with every oiling.

Care Instructions

Your board arrives pre-oiled, pre-waxed, and ready to use. A well-loved, well-oiled board will last a lifetime.

✅ Do

  • Wash by hand — warm water and a small amount of mild soap; never soak
  • Dry immediately — stand upright or on its side; never lay flat on a wet surface (allow airflow)
  • Re-oil every 1–2 months — apply food-grade mineral oil or board oil generously, let it absorb, then wipe off the excess
  • Re-wax occasionally — a thin coat of beeswax every few months keeps the surface sealed and the colours rich
  • Revive if needed — if the surface ever feels rough, a light sand with 220-grit paper followed by oiling restores it completely

❌ Don't

  • No dishwasher — ever. Heat and prolonged moisture will crack and warp the board irreversibly
  • No microwave — wood and microwaves don't mix
  • No soaking — never submerge or leave standing in water
  • No direct sunlight — extended exposure can fade the sapele's reddish-brown tone over time

💡 Sapele naturally deepens to a richer reddish-brown with age and regular oiling — a transformation that makes the checkerboard contrast more striking, not less.

FAQ

Is the board ready to use straight out of the box?

Yes. Every board is finished with multiple hand-applied coats of food-safe mineral oil and beeswax before it ships. No prep needed — unbox, admire, and start cooking.

What is sapele, and is it safe for food contact?

Sapele is a premium African hardwood from the mahogany family, prized for its warm reddish-brown colour, shimmering ribbon-figure grain, and natural durability. When properly finished with food-safe mineral oil and beeswax — as every MNCWOOD board is — sapele is completely safe for all food contact.

How is the checkerboard pattern made?

Each square is individually cut and glued by hand in our Polish workshop. The checkerboard is built block by block from two separate hardwoods — not printed, stamped, or veneered. Because it's end-grain, each square reveals its own unique pattern of annual rings, making every block visually one of a kind.

Can I cut raw meat on it?

Absolutely. End-grain boards are the preferred surface for all types of food prep including meat — easy to sanitise, naturally hygienic, and built to handle heavy use. Wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately after.

Why end-grain instead of face-grain or edge-grain?

End-grain construction means the knife enters between wood fibres rather than cutting across them. The fibres close back up after each cut — the surface self-heals, your knives stay sharper for longer, and the board absorbs impact better, resisting deep gouges that can harbour bacteria.

Will the colours change over time?

Yes, and beautifully. Sapele naturally deepens to a richer reddish-brown with age and regular oiling. Ash develops a warmer golden patina. The checkerboard contrast remains striking — many owners say their board becomes more beautiful every year.

Does it come with rubber feet?

No — we deliberately leave the bottom clean for a minimal aesthetic and to allow the board to be used on both sides if needed. Rubber feet can be added on request at no extra charge — just leave a note at checkout.

How heavy is the board? Will it slide?

At approximately 2.0–2.4 kg, the board has enough weight to stay firmly in place during normal prep work. For very heavy chopping, place a damp dish towel underneath for extra grip.

Can I get a custom size or different wood combination?

Yes. We welcome custom orders — different dimensions, alternative wood species, or bulk orders for weddings and events. Send us a message through the store and we'll respond within one business day.

How do I care for the engraving?

The laser engraving is deep and permanent — it won't fade with oiling or normal use. Treat the engraved area exactly the same as the rest of the board.

What if my board arrives damaged?

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with a photo. We'll arrange a replacement or full refund — no questions asked.
