The Everyday Board You Won't Want to Put Away

Some kitchen tools earn a permanent spot on the counter — this is one of them.

Crafted from solid European ash with a flowing sapele inlay that curves like a river through the pale grain, this cutting board pairs two hardwoods whose natural contrast does all the talking. Light ash. Warm reddish-brown sapele. Simple. Striking. Entirely handmade.

The integrated handle with hang hole turns this board into an everyday kitchen companion — ready to grab, ready to hang, ready to use.

🌿 The Sapele Inlay — A Signature Detail

A slim strip of sapele is hand-inlaid into the ash surface, creating a warm, ribboning line of reddish-brown that runs across the board. Sapele's natural lustre — sometimes called the "ribbon figure" — catches the light differently depending on the angle.

It's a subtle detail that makes the board feel truly considered and one-of-a-kind — the kind of handmade touch you don't find in a mass-produced board.

🌾 Two Hardwoods. One Continuous Surface.

European Ash — warm pale straw tones with an open, expressive cathedral grain. Strong, light, shock-resistant, and the perfect canvas for the darker inlay to shine against.

Sapele — a premium African hardwood with a deep reddish-brown colour and shimmering ribbon-figure grain. Naturally resistant to moisture and rich with character.

No stains. No dyes. Every tone is the wood itself.

🔪 Face-Grain Construction — Smooth & Reliable

Face-grain construction uses the wide, flat surface of the wood — giving you a smooth, uniform cutting area that showcases the beautiful long-grain figure of both the ash body and the sapele inlay. It's the classic everyday board format: stable, easy to maintain, and light enough to move around the kitchen effortlessly.

With proper care, a face-grain board delivers years of reliable daily use.

Care Instructions

Your board arrives pre-oiled, pre-waxed, and ready to use. With minimal upkeep, it will last for years of daily kitchen work.

✅ Do

  • Wash by hand — warm water and a small amount of mild soap
  • Dry immediately — stand upright or lay flat on a rack; never leave wet on a surface
  • Hang to store — use the built-in hang hole for best airflow and longevity
  • Re-oil every 1–2 months — apply food-grade mineral oil generously to keep both the ash and sapele hydrated
  • Re-wax occasionally — a thin coat of beeswax every few months keeps the surface sealed and the inlay rich in colour

❌ Don't

  • No dishwasher — ever. Heat and prolonged moisture will crack and warp the board irreversibly
  • No soaking — never submerge or leave standing in water
  • No abrasive cleaners — avoid harsh scrubbers or chemicals near the sapele inlay
  • No direct sunlight — extended exposure can fade the sapele's reddish-brown tone over time

💡 Sapele naturally deepens into a richer reddish-brown with age and regular oiling — a transformation that makes the inlay more striking, not less.

FAQ

Is the board ready to use straight out of the box?

Yes. Every board is finished with multiple hand-applied coats of food-safe mineral oil and beeswax before it ships. No prep needed — unbox, admire, and start cooking.

What is sapele, and is it safe for food contact?

Sapele is a premium African hardwood from the mahogany family, prized for its deep reddish-brown colour, shimmering ribbon-figure grain, and natural durability. When properly finished with food-safe mineral oil and beeswax — as every MNCWOOD board is — sapele is completely safe for all food contact.

How is the sapele inlay made?

The inlay is hand-cut and fitted into a precisely routed channel in the ash body, then sanded flush with the surrounding surface. There are no gaps, no visible glue lines, and no raised edges — the transition between ash and sapele is completely seamless, both visually and to the touch.

Will the inlay stay flat over time?

Yes. Because both woods are selected, dried, and assembled with care — and because the inlay is flush-sanded rather than surface-glued — the two woods move together through humidity changes. Regular oiling further stabilises the surface. No lifting, no cracking, no warping under normal kitchen use.

Can I hang it by the handle?

Yes — the hang hole is designed exactly for this. Hanging the board is actually the best way to store it, as it lets air circulate around all surfaces and prevents moisture buildup.

Is this board for cutting or serving?

Both. The end-grain construction makes it fully capable as a daily cutting board, while the handle and compact size make it equally suited to serving — charcuterie, bread, cheese, or fruit. Many owners use it as an everyday workhorse that doubles as a presentation piece for guests.

Can I cut raw meat on it?

Absolutely. End-grain boards are the preferred surface for all types of food prep including meat — easy to sanitise, naturally hygienic, and built to handle heavy use. Wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately after.

Why end-grain instead of face-grain or edge-grain?

End-grain construction means the knife enters between wood fibres rather than cutting across them. The fibres close back up after each cut — the surface self-heals, your knives stay sharper for longer, and the board improves visually with age rather than deteriorating.

Will the colours change over time?

Yes, and beautifully. Sapele naturally deepens to a richer reddish-brown with age and regular oiling. Ash develops a warmer golden patina. The contrast between the two woods remains striking — many owners say their board becomes more beautiful every year.

Can I get a custom size or different wood combination?

Yes. We welcome custom orders — different dimensions, alternative wood species, or bulk orders for weddings and events. Send us a message through the store and we'll respond within one business day.

How do I care for the engraving?

The laser engraving is deep and permanent — it won't fade with oiling or normal use. Treat the engraved area exactly the same as the rest of the board.

What if my board arrives damaged?

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with a photo. We'll arrange a replacement or full refund — no questions asked.
